1980 Hans Christian 38 MKII

AMORE is a beautifully updated Hans Christian 38 MKII, one of the most respected and sought-after bluewater cruising yachts ever built. Renowned for their distinctive double-ended profile, heavy-displacement full-keel design, and exceptional craftsmanship, Hans Christian yachts have earned a loyal following among serious offshore sailors seeking comfort, safety, and self-sufficiency at sea.

Designed for passagemaking and life aboard, the Hans Christian 38 MKII delivers the sea-kindly motion and confidence-inspiring handling that have made the model a favorite among cruising sailors for decades. Her robust construction, protected cockpit, and proven hull design provide a comfortable ride in a wide range of conditions, while her manageable size makes her equally suitable for a cruising couple or a small family.

Unlike many classic cruising yachts, AMORE benefits from a number of significant modern upgrades that substantially enhance her reliability, comfort, and offshore capability. Among the most notable improvements is the complete replacement of the original teak decks with fiberglass and modern non-skid surfaces, eliminating one of the most common maintenance concerns for yachts of this vintage. She has also been repowered with a dependable 36hp Yanmar diesel engine and professionally rewired to ABYC marine standards, representing major investments that will be appreciated by her next owner.

Her sailing systems have likewise received thoughtful attention, including a custom-cut mainsail by Port Townsend Sails, mast rewiring, a reinforced stainless-steel mast compression post, upgraded Harken furling gear, and extensive stainless safety rail installations throughout the deck. Together, these upgrades create a capable and confidence-inspiring platform for coastal cruising, offshore passagemaking, or full-time life afloat.

Energy independence and cruising self-sufficiency are further supported by a decent solar array, upgraded battery banks, Schenker watermaker, Outback inverter/charger system, wind vane self-steering, modern Raymarine navigation electronics, Starlink connectivity, and a comprehensive inventory of cruising equipment. Whether anchored in a remote bay or underway on a longer passage, AMORE is exceptionally well-equipped to support an autonomous cruising lifestyle.

Below decks, the warmth and character that made Hans Christian yachts legendary remain immediately apparent. Rich joinery, thoughtful craftsmanship, and a practical cruising layout create an inviting interior that feels perfectly suited to extended voyages. Accommodations include a spacious forward Pullman berth, starboard quarter berth, comfortable main saloon, marine head compartment, and a well-appointed galley designed for serious onboard cooking. The galley features an Isotherm refrigeration and freezer system, Force 10 three-burner range with oven, and the signature center-island sink arrangement that has become a hallmark of the design.

For sailors seeking a proven bluewater cruiser that successfully combines timeless character with meaningful modern upgrades, AMORE represents a rare opportunity. Conveniently located in the renowned cruising grounds of San Carlos, Sea of Cortez, Mexico, she is fully equipped, extensively updated, and ready to carry her next owners toward new horizons.

From the owner:

Amore is a Hans Christian 38 MkII — a Harwood Ives’s refined, full-keel cutter — that has genuinely sailed the miles her pedigree promises. Under current ownership she’s run Hawaii to Alaska, the Inside Passage to Puget Sound, offshore to California, and down to the Sea of Cortez, including a 14-day single-handed passage from Port Townsend to San Diego through two gales. High latitudes and tropics, proven both ways. Over the past 13 years, the current owner has sailed over 10,000 nautical miles.

This is not a dock queen. A professional mariner has owned, lived aboard, and actively sailed her for 13 years… and the big, expensive work has been done.

A heavy-displacement full-keel double-ender with the “Cadillac ride” these boats are known for — Amore is sea-kindly, forgiving, and safe when it pipes up. Right-sized for economical, autonomous, comfortable cruising. Solid, well-sorted, and honestly represented by an owner who knows her intimately. Ready for her next chapter.

This listing also includes a 2007 Cadillac Escalade EXT in the purchase price.

Accommodations

AMORE has the quintessential Hans Christian warmth, charm, and craftsmanship that fans of this boat vintage have come to love. Rich teak joinery, traditional detailing, and thoughtful use of space create an atmosphere that feels like a cozy waterfront cottage. White overhead planking throughout the interior brightens the living spaces and beautifully complements the abundant teak woodwork, while bronze portlights and overhead hatches provide natural light and ventilation.

With approximately 6’4″ (1.93 m) of headroom throughout the main cabin, the interior feels remarkably spacious and comfortable for extended cruising or full-time liveaboard life.

Main Saloon

The heart of the yacht is the inviting main saloon, centered around the center island – a signature of this model. This clever design incorporates the galley sink within the island, allowing for generous wraparound seating that creates an exceptionally social and comfortable living space. An L-shaped settee to port and a full bench seat to starboard provide ample room for dining, relaxing, or entertaining guests around the centrally mounted dinette table.

Storage is abundant throughout the saloon, with numerous lockers, cupboards, shelving, and cabinetry thoughtfully integrated into the rich teak interior. A Dickinson diesel heater provides warmth and comfort during cooler evenings or high-latitude cruising, while a surround audio system adds to the onboard entertainment at sea.

Forward on the starboard side is the navigation station, complete with electrical panels, instrumentation, and dedicated workspace for passage planning and vessel management.

Galley

Located to port, the practical seagoing galley is designed for safe and efficient meal preparation underway or at anchor. The layout includes a Force 10 propane stove and oven, integrated refrigeration and freezer space, dedicated dish storage, drawers, and cabinets. Its compact yet highly functional design keeps everything within easy reach while maintaining excellent security when underway.

Owner’s Stateroom

Forward of the saloon is the surprisingly spacious owner’s cabin, featuring an exceptionally large Pullman-style double berth to port. Built-in drawers, storage compartments, and opening portlights enhance both comfort and practicality, while a handsome dresser with countertop space occupies the starboard side of the cabin.

Further forward, a dedicated vanity area provides additional storage, a stainless steel sink, decorative faucet, and mirror, creating a private dressing and grooming space rarely found aboard yachts of this size.

Head & Shower

The private head compartment is located forward of the owner’s cabin on the port side, providing privacy and convenience. At the bow, a separate shower area features a built-in bench seat, creating a unique and comfortable bathing area well suited to extended cruising and life aboard.

Quarter Berth

Aft of the saloon on the starboard side is a comfortable double quarter berth that serves equally well as guest accommodations, a secure sea berth during passages, or additional storage space when cruising as a couple. Cabinetry and storage nearby further enhance the functionality of this versatile area.

Combining handcrafted teak joinery, intelligent use of space, generous storage, and the unmistakable character of a traditional bluewater cruiser, AMORE’s interior remains one of the most inviting and practical features of this iconic Hans Christian 38 MKII.

Deck

One of the most significant upgrades aboard AMORE is the complete removal of the original teak decks. The decks have been professionally glassed over and finished with a modern non-skid surface, eliminating one of the most common maintenance concerns associated with classic bluewater yachts while preserving the vessel’s appearance and offshore capability. This substantial improvement not only reduces maintenance requirements but also enhances long-term structural integrity and reliability.

Cockpit

The deep, secure cockpit is a hallmark of the Hans Christian design philosophy. Well protected by high coamings and surrounded by substantial structure, the self-bailing cockpit offers excellent security in rough conditions while remaining spacious enough for entertaining guests at anchor.

A traditional bronze binnacle houses the compass and wheel steering system. A built-in teak storage box aft of the helm provides convenient deck-level storage, while winches and sail controls are positioned by the companionway for efficient sail handling.

The companionway area is fitted with dorade vents for passive ventilation and all-weather comfort below decks. Forward-facing navigation displays are mounted within easy view of the helm, while the signature sliding companionway hatch and vented teak companionway doors remain beautifully consistent with the yacht’s traditional styling.

Foredeck & Ground Tackle

Forward, AMORE features the iconic teak and stainless-steel bowsprit that has become synonymous with the Hans Christian name. The bowsprit is outfitted with custom stainless strike plate on the underside to protect hull from chafe or damage by anchor use. Beyond creating the yacht’s unmistakable profile, the bowsprit serves as a highly practical working platform for anchoring operations.

A dual bow roller arrangement supports a twin-anchor setup, providing the redundancy and versatility appreciated by experienced cruisers. AMORE is set up with heavy ground tackle to provide reliable holding in inclement conditions. The generous foredeck space allows safe anchor handling and line management while maintaining clear passage around the vessel.

Hatches and bronze portlights provide both ventilation and classic yacht character, while robust deck hardware throughout reflects the heavy-duty construction standards that established the Hans Christian reputation for offshore durability.

Rig & Sail Handling

The aluminum mast is equipped with mast steps, providing convenient access aloft for inspection and maintenance. A spinnaker pole is mounted at the mast and can be utilized both for downwind sailing and as a practical lifting aid for dinghy handling and offshore cruising operations.
