2002 Hunter 306

The Hunter 306 (built 2002–2006) is an American fractional-rig pocket cruiser designed by Glenn Henderson and built by Hunter Marine, with roughly 350 hulls produced. At 29 feet 11 inches LOA (about 32 feet with the reverse transom and bowsprit) and a very generous 10-foot 6-inch beam, it has a moderate displacement and features Hunter’s signature backstay-less B&R rig with swept spreaders, a large roachy fully battened mainsail, roller-furling jib, and an asymmetrical spinnaker delivering good performance.

Stand-out features include wheel steering with an Edson wheel, a huge T-shaped cockpit with full walk-through reverse transom and swim platform, and one of the brightest, most open interiors ever seen under 30 feet: enormous aft cabin with an athwartships queen-size berth, private forward V-berth, full galley with Corian counters and two-burner stove, enclosed head with separate shower stall, nav station, and a convertible dinette – allowing up to six sleeping adults aboard – with over 6 ft 4 in headroom and superb ventilation. Fast, stiff, comfortable, and genuinely capable of week-long cruising for a family, the Hunter 306 remains extremely popular.

Key Features and Performance

  • Features a 10′ 6″ beam, high freeboard, and a tall, powerful fractional rig. It is considered a “fast” cruiser in light air.
  • Known for its large T-shaped cockpit and walk-through reverse transom with a swim platform.
  • Very easy to solo-sail, with all lines leading to the cockpit.
  • Slab-reefed mainsail, delivering a more powerful sail plan and better upwind capability than the 306’s with in-mast furling
  • Powered by a 18hp Yanmar diesel engine, providing efficient motoring (approx. 0.5 gallons per hour) at speeds of 5.5–6.5 knots.
  • Offers 6′ 4″ headroom, a roomy aft cabin, a comfortable saloon, and a fully equipped galley with Corian counters.

“Valiente” is ideal for solo sailors, couples, or small families seeking an easy-to-handle coastal cruiser. With its wide beam providing surprising interior space and its uncluttered rig design, it perfectly suits those prioritizing comfortable weekending and simple handling over offshore racing or passagemaking.

Conveniently located in the gorgeous cruising grounds of San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico, this comfortably appointed coastal cruiser is waiting to take you on the adventure of a lifetime. Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to own a truly exceptional boat, ready to create lasting memories on the water.

Accommodations

Belowdecks, the Hunter 306 makes excellent use of her 30-foot length, offering a bright, open interior that is equally suited to weekends away or extended coastal cruising. Descending the companionway, you’ll find a practical navigation station to starboard complete with a chart table and electrical panels, while to port the L-shaped galley provides everything needed for meal preparation underway, including a two-burner propane stove, stainless steel sink, and top-loading refrigerated icebox. Engine access beneath the companionway steps is straightforward, making routine maintenance simple.

The main saloon is warm, inviting, and designed for comfortable living. A spacious dinette surrounds the folding table at the center of the cabin, complemented by a long port-side settee that also serves as a practical sea berth on passage. Generous storage is integrated throughout the seating, while large opening hatches and Lewmar opening portlights provide abundant natural light and ventilation.

Forward, the private V-berth stateroom offers comfortable accommodations for two, with storage beneath the berth and convenient access to the freshwater tank. Aft, the surprisingly spacious owner’s cabin features a generous athwartships berth approaching queen-size dimensions, along with a large hanging locker, shelving, and substantial storage beneath the mattress. The thoughtful layout also provides easy access to plumbing and tankage for servicing.

The enclosed head is positioned to starboard and includes a marine toilet, vanity with hot and cold pressurized water, handheld shower, and ample storage for toiletries and cruising essentials. Throughout the cabin, 110V AC outlets, 12V charging points, cabin lighting, and ventilation combine to create a comfortable onboard environment whether at anchor or in the marina.

For owners who value practicality, the Hunter 306 also offers excellent service access. The engine compartment can be reached from multiple locations, providing good access for routine maintenance, while the insulated machinery space is well ventilated. Steering components and emergency tiller access are also readily available, reflecting the thoughtful engineering that has made the Hunter 306 a popular and enduring coastal cruiser.

Deck

The Hunter 306 offers a practical, well-organized deck layout designed for comfortable coastal cruising and easy handling. Forward, the stainless steel bow pulpit, single anchor roller, stem fitting, deck-accessed chain locker, and below-deck 12V horizontal windlass create a clean and functional anchoring setup. Stainless stanchions with upper and lower lifelines run securely along both sides of the vessel, leading aft to cockpit gates and continuing to the stern arch and pushpit area.

Moving aft, the cockpit is arranged for both sailing efficiency and relaxation. The signature Hunter arch supports the bimini frame and carries the mainsheet traveler overhead, keeping the cockpit more open and guest-friendly. The helm features wheel steering, a central binnacle/cockpit table, starboard-side engine controls, cabin-top winches and line clutches, organized line leads, and generous lazarette storage beneath the port cockpit seat. A walkthrough transom, folding stern seat, swim step, and hinged boarding ladder make water access simple, while the aft rail seating, outboard bracket, propane locker, lifering, multiple deck cleats, opening hatches, and stainless handrails add to the boat’s overall cruising practicality.
