2004 Dufour 44 Performance

Second Wind is a well-equipped 2004 Dufour 44 Performance that successfully delivers on the model’s original design brief: genuine sailing performance without sacrificing the comfort, storage, and accommodations expected of a capable cruising yacht.

With the deck designed by Umberto Felci and interior design by Patrick Roséo, the Dufour 44 Performance combines a powerful fractional rig, efficient hull form, and responsive handling with a comfortable three-cabin, two-head interior. Her nearly plumb bow, low-profile coachroof, and beam carried well aft give her a purposeful, contemporary profile while creating impressive volume below.

Second Wind has remained with the same family since she was purchased new in 2004. Her history reflects both sides of the Dufour 44 Performance’s character. The family spent her earlier years sailing the U.S. East Coast, including summers in New Jersey and winters in South Florida, where she raced successfully on multiple occasions. In 2017, focus shifted toward extended cruising as she was sailed through the Bahamas, transited the Panama Canal, and continued north to San Francisco.

After several years of sailing and cruising upgrades in California, Second Wind headed south again with the 2021 Baja Ha-Ha and has since cruised Mexican waters. This combination of competitive sailing, long-distance passagemaking, and continued cruising use provides a real-world record of the versatility for which the 44 Performance was designed.

Deck & Exterior

On deck, the Dufour 44P features a performance-oriented deck and cockpit layout built for a balance of coastal cruising and club racing.

Beginning at the bow, Second Wind is equipped with substantial ground tackle: a Rocna primary anchor and a Fortress secondary anchor with hundreds of feet of chain between them. Rounding this out is a new Lewmar CPX3 windlass which was installed in 2026.

The wide teak decks were replaced in 2015, and the most recent bottom paint was completed in December 2025.

Second Wind carries an extensive and recently updated Bremen Sails inventory. The 2019 Dacron mainsail and genoa are complemented by an asymmetric spinnaker, storm jib, and trysail, giving the crew useful options across a broad range of conditions.

Sail handling is configured with cruising efficiency in mind. Lines are led aft to the cockpit, and all deck equipment has been updated to Harken hardware with six Harken winches to manage sail controls, Harken roller furling, and a hydraulic Harken backstay adjuster, as well as Selden boom vang and Forespar carbon/aluminum whisker pole. Running rigging uses Dyneema-core line.

The standing rigging was recently inspected, and replacement of the forestay and backstay is planned for December 2026 based on that inspection recommendation.

The spacious cockpit works equally well underway or at anchor. A removable pedestal-mounted table provides comfortable dining space, while the folding helm seat opens the cockpit directly to the sugar-scoop transom and swim step.

Canvas includes a Sunbrella dodger with new windows in 2025, a 2025 Sunbrella bimini, cockpit cushions, wheel cover, mainsail Stack Pack, and a full boat cover added in 2024.

A hot-and-cold transom shower and stainless swim ladder make the stern especially practical for swimming, diving, and tender operations.

The tender package has also recently been upgraded with a new 11-foot Takacat inflatable in 2026, powered by a 2018 Tohatsu 6hp outboard and carried on stainless-steel davits.

Systems and Upgrades

A major advantage of Second Wind is the level of investment made in the systems that matter most to an active cruising owner. She was repowered in 2024 with a 55hp Caterpillar diesel, currently showing approximately 500 hours, paired with a Flexofold three-blade folding propeller. Her spade rudder was replaced in 2020.

Electrical capacity is particularly strong. The house bank consists of four 110Ah Valence LiFePO4 batteries, supported by approximately 1,000 watts of solar, four Victron MPPT regulators, a Victron MultiPlus 3000VA inverter/charger, and a 100-amp Balmar alternator installed in 2023. This system provides substantial capacity for operating onboard appliances and supporting extended periods away from shore power.

A 20 GPH Aqua Max watermaker installed in 2023 further improves self-sufficiency, while Starlink and Iridium GO provide communication options beyond conventional cellular coverage.

The navigation suite includes two Raymarine HybridTouch chartplotters, Raymarine AIS transceiver, Raymarine 4k radar, dual GPS capability, depth instrumentation, and wind instrumentation with a new masthead unit and wiring.

A Pelagic autopilot installed in 2024 supports offshore and short-handed cruising, while an Icom VHF at the navigation station is complemented by a remote microphone at the helm. The masthead VHF antenna and cable have also been renewed.

Additional cruising equipment includes salon air conditioning, 120 gallons of freshwater capacity, 70 gallons of fuel, LED navigation lights, bronze through-hulls replaced in 2021, Lifesling, EPIRB, jacklines, and a six-person offshore liferaft.

Three-Cabin Interior

Below decks, Second Wind offers the considerable interior volume that distinguishes the Dufour 44 Performance from more race-focused designs.

The main saloon has approximately 6’4″ of headroom and combines an L-shaped dinette to port with a settee to starboard. Both can serve as additional sea berths, and the centerline dining table creates a comfortable social area for meals and entertaining.

The U-shaped galley provides a secure working environment underway and includes an Isotherm top-loading refrigerator, additional portable Engel fridge/freezer, ENO two-burner gimballed stove with oven, double stainless-steel sinks, and generous storage.

Three private cabins provide excellent flexibility for a cruising couple, family, or guests. The forward cabin offers a double berth, approximately 6’2″ of headroom, storage, and access to a private head, while matching double cabins aft provide additional accommodations. The saloon also incorporates two single berths with lee cloths.

Two heads complete the layout, with plumbing hoses for both replaced in 2020.

For sailors seeking more than a conventional production cruiser, Second Wind presents a compelling combination: the sailing pedigree and responsive performance of a true performance cruiser, paired with the energy capacity, watermaking capability, accommodations, communications, tender equipment, and practical upgrades needed for serious cruising.

After more than two decades with the same family and thousands of miles of racing, passagemaking, and cruising behind her, Second Wind is ready for her next owners to take the helm.

Accommodations

The Dufour 44 Performance makes excellent use of its interior volume, delivering a layout that feels notably spacious for a 44-foot performance cruiser. The three-cabin, two-head arrangement provides a strong balance between private sleeping accommodations, generous communal space, and practical cruising functionality.

Main Saloon / Galley / Nav Station

The main saloon is bright, open, and comfortable, with approximately 6’4″ of headroom creating an airy feel throughout the central living area. To port, an L-shaped dinette provides a welcoming space for meals, entertaining, or relaxing at anchor, while a settee to starboard adds additional seating and can also serve as an optional sea berth.

The layout is well suited to both family cruising and time aboard with guests, offering a comfortable separation between social areas and sleeping quarters.

The U-shaped galley is arranged for efficient use underway and at anchor, with secure working space and good access to storage. Equipment includes a deep double sink, three-burner stove, and ample lockers and drawers for provisions, cookware, and galley supplies.

Thoughtful storage details include ventilated produce bins in selected drawers, helping keep provisions organized during longer cruises.

Forward of the starboard guest head is a substantial navigation station with enough space for charts, electronics, and passage-planning equipment. Its location keeps vessel management functions close at hand without intruding on the main living area.

Three-Cabin Layout

The accommodation plan includes three private sleeping cabins.

Aft, there are matching double cabins to port and starboard, providing comfortable guest accommodations and useful separation from the forward owner’s cabin.

Forward, the principal cabin features a generous V-berth, approximately 6’2″ of headroom, a hanging locker, and additional shelf storage for personal belongings.

The yacht is equipped with two head compartments, supporting comfortable use by owners and guests on longer trips.

Natural light and ventilation are provided by multiple deck hatches and opening portlights throughout the interior, helping create a bright and well-ventilated environment. There are also fans mounted in the salon and in each cabin. The interior joinery is finished to a high standard, with varnished wood veneers, lighter trim accents, and teak-and-holly flooring contributing to a refined yet practical cruising atmosphere.

Overall, the Dufour 44 Performance offers an appealing combination of space, privacy, and functionality. Its three-cabin, two-head configuration makes it especially well suited to a cruising couple hosting guests, a family, or buyers seeking a performance-oriented yacht that does not sacrifice comfort below decks.
