2003 Hunter 466

Double Dharma is a well-established 2003 Hunter 466 offering the space, comfort, and onboard systems that make this model particularly appealing to cruising couples and liveaboards. With three private cabins, two heads, substantial tankage, a large protected cockpit, straightforward sail handling, and an extensive cruising inventory, she has been intentionally outfitted for extended time aboard.

Built by Hunter Marine and designed by the Hunter Design Team, the 466 combines a broad 14-foot beam and substantial interior volume with a practical B&R sloop rig, fin keel, and semi-balanced spade rudder. Her in-mast furling mainsail, roller-furling headsail, lines led aft, and electric Lewmar winch reduce the workload for a cruising couple, while the signature stainless-steel cockpit arch keeps the traveler overhead and out of the primary seating area.

The large aft cockpit provides room for both sailing and entertaining, with seating for a whole family, a folding cockpit table, and two stern rail seats. A dodger, bimini, and additional cockpit canvas provide protection from the sun and weather — particularly valuable for cruising Mexico and other warm climates. At the helm, a Whitlock pedestal places engine controls and navigation equipment within easy reach. Sail controls are led aft, and the combination of in-mast mainsail furling, Selden headsail furling, and an electric self-tailing Lewmar 48 winch makes sail management considerably easier for a couple or short-handed crew. The walk-through transom opens directly onto an integrated swim platform with boarding ladder, making swimming, snorkeling, dinghy boarding, and everyday life at anchor easy.

This listing includes a Bombard Typhoon inflatable tender with Mercury 8hp two-stroke outboard. Custom stainless-steel dinghy davits were added in 2018, along with an outboard motor/MOB hoist.

A substantial electronics upgrade was completed in 2021, including a Raymarine Axiom 9 chartplotter with digital radar and a Raymarine ACU400 autopilot system. Additional instrumentation includes Raymarine ST60 depth, speed/log, and wind displays, along with an Icom IC-M424 VHF and Icom IC-M802 SSB with tuner. Navigation and communications equipment are conveniently arranged between the helm and dedicated navigation station below.

Below decks, the Hunter 466’s greatest strength becomes immediately apparent: space.

Approximately 6’6″ of headroom, extensive natural light, warm teak joinery, and teak-and-holly cabin soles create an interior that feels considerably larger than many cruising yachts in this size range. The main saloon centers around a large and plush U-shaped settee and teak dining table, supplemented by a slide-out bench. The dining area converts for additional sleeping capacity when needed. Opposite, two club-style lounge chairs with a cocktail table create a separate space for reading or relaxing. The galley is designed for extended life aboard, with generous Corian work surfaces, an island with double stainless-steel sinks, refrigerator and separate freezer, three-burner Force 10 propane stove with oven, and built-in microwave.

Forward, the private owner’s suite features a centerline queen island berth, substantial drawer storage, and dual cedar-lined hanging lockers. Its split ensuite arrangement places the freshwater VacuFlush toilet and vanity in a private compartment to port and a separate fiberglass shower stall to starboard. The shower is presently fitted with removable shelving for added storage and can readily be returned to its original use. Two private double guest cabins are located aft, complemented by a second freshwater VacuFlush head with integrated shower.

Double Dharma carries much of the equipment buyers seek when preparing a yacht for extended cruising.

Electrical autonomy is supported by four Lifeline AGM house batteries, solar charging, inverter, battery charger, smart regulator, alternator, and a Northern Lights 6kW diesel generator. The generator showed 591 hours when recorded in the 2021 survey. Three air-conditioning units provide onboard climate control. Freshwater capacity is exceptional at approximately 250 gallons, supplemented by an HRO 170 watermaker. Fuel capacity is approximately 100 gallons, giving the yacht useful range under power.

Ground tackle is equally cruising-oriented, and recently updated, with a 25 kg Rocna primary anchor on approximately 228 feet of re-galvanized chain, backed by a 40 lb Bruce with additional chain and nylon rode. A Lewmar Horizon 12V windlass handles anchoring duties.

Double Dharma’s story is an important part of her appeal. Her current owners purchased her in 2005 when she was just two years old and spent the following years sailing the California coast, inland waterways, and participating in regular racing while preparing her for retirement cruising. In 2010, they departed San Francisco and headed south. What was originally envisioned as the beginning of a much broader cruising itinerary ultimately led them to the Sea of Cortez and Mexico, where they found so much to do and explore that they never left. As they cruised and lived aboard full-time, they continued developing Double Dharma as their cruising home, adding equipment for comfort, shade, safety, and self-sufficiency. She has become a familiar vessel within the local cruising community – even assisting other sailors in distress. After more than two decades of ownership, they are now transitioning to life ashore and offering Double Dharma up to continue her adventures.

Currently afloat in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico, Double Dharma is already positioned at the gateway to the Sea of Cortez — one of North America’s premier cruising grounds. After more than twenty years with the same owners, Double Dharma is ready for a new crew and a new chapter. For buyers seeking a comfortable cruising yacht that has already served successfully as a full-time home afloat, she offers a compelling combination of space and practical capability.

Accommodations

With approximately 6’6″ of headroom, extensive natural light from numerous hatches and ports, teak-and-holly cabin soles, and warm teak joinery throughout, the interior feels bright, open, and considerably larger than many yachts in this size range.

Main Saloon & Navigation Station

The main saloon is spacious and inviting, with a large U-shaped settee and slide-out bench seat arranged around a high-gloss teak dining table. The dining area can also convert to provide additional sleeping accommodations when needed, adding useful flexibility for family or guests.

To starboard, a pair of comfortable club-style lounge seats is separated by a central cocktail table, creating a relaxed secondary seating area ideal for reading or conversation.

Immediately aft is the forward-facing navigation station, equipped with a generous chart table, curved seat, electronics space, and the vessel’s main electrical breaker panel.

Engine and mechanical access is conveniently located beneath the cockpit, allowing direct access to the Yanmar engine compartment for inspection and service.

Galley

Located immediately to port of the companionway, the L-shaped galley with island designed for both comfortable everyday use and secure meal preparation underway.

Corian solid-surface countertops provide ample workspace, while molded fiddles help keep items secure at sea. The central island incorporates deep double stainless-steel sinks and adds useful separation between the galley and main living area.

Refrigeration is substantial, with a 12V refrigerator and separate freezer offering both front- and top-loading access. Cooking equipment includes a three-burner Force 10 propane stove with oven and broiler, along with a built-in microwave.

The result is a well-equipped galley with the storage, counter space, and appliance capacity needed for extended cruising or full-time life aboard.

Forward Owner’s Stateroom

The forward owner’s suite is one of the standout features of the Hunter 466 interior.

A centerline queen-size island berth provides comfortable access from both sides, while generous drawer storage beneath the berth and dual cedar-lined hanging lockers offer excellent capacity for clothing and personal belongings.

The ensuite arrangement is particularly practical, with the freshwater vacuum-flush toilet and vanity located in a private compartment to port and a completely separate fiberglass shower stall to starboard. This split-head design allows both spaces to be used independently and adds a level of convenience more commonly associated with larger yachts.

The shower compartment is currently configured with removable shelving for additional storage, but it can be readily returned to its original shower configuration.

Aft Guest Cabins

Two private guest cabins are located aft, one to port and one to starboard of the companionway.

Each cabin features a double berth, standing headroom, cedar-lined hanging storage, and opening ports for natural light and cross-ventilation. The mirrored layout provides comfortable and private accommodations for family, friends, or additional crew.

Guest Head

A second head is located aft to starboard, convenient to both the cockpit and aft guest cabins.

This compartment includes a freshwater vacuum-flush marine toilet, vanity, and integrated shower, providing practical facilities for guests without requiring access to the private forward owner’s suite.

Deck

Forward, the anchoring system is arranged for efficient and secure operation, with dual bow rollers, a dedicated chain locker, and a 12-volt horizontal windlass housed within a protected enclosure. The setup provides convenient access to the vessel’s ground tackle while keeping the foredeck organized and functional.

A welded stainless-steel bow pulpit, substantial stanchions, and upper and lower solid tubular lifelines extend along both sides of the yacht, providing secure protection when moving fore and aft. Additional handholds on the cabintop and dodger further improve safety and confidence while underway.

The spacious aft cockpit is designed as both a secure sailing station and a comfortable outdoor living area. A dodger, bimini and full cockpit enclosure provide valuable protection from sun and weather, while generous seating creates ample room for crew and guests.

At the helm is the Whitlock pedestal and wheel, navigation instruments and engine controls – all positioned within convenient reach of the helmsman. Sail controls are led aft to the cockpit, simplifying sail handling and allowing the crew to manage much of the vessel without unnecessary movement forward.

Substantial lazarette storage provides room for cruising gear and deck equipment, while two dedicated propane lockers keep fuel storage isolated and accessible.

Boarding gates are provided to port, starboard, and aft, making access aboard easy from a dock or tender.

The walk-through transom opens directly onto the integral swim platform, creating convenient access to the water for swimming, snorkeling, diving, and boarding from the dinghy. A folding swim ladder further improves accessibility.

A stainless-steel davit system at the stern provides convenient tender storage and handling. The aft arrangement also includes an outboard motor mount and a dedicated motor/MOB hoist, adding practical versatility for cruising operations.

Solar panels mounted above the stern contribute to the vessel’s onboard charging capability while making efficient use of otherwise unused exterior space.
